The course introduces the theory and background of International and Transnational Criminal Law. You will learn to identify international and transnational crimes, understand their differences, and critically assess the challenges of supranational criminal law and overlapping jurisdictions.

Study methods: The course has two alternative modes of study:
Mode of Study 1: The course is organized as seminar, consisting of mandatory seminar meetings. During the seminar, the student will write a seminar paper on a topic given by the lecturer. Moreover, students will give a presentation on their seminar paper and examine other students’ papers during the seminar.
Mode of Study 2: Students take the written exam, which is based on independent study. The written examination can be taken in Finnish or in English through the e-platform.
E-platform:
The course has two different e-platforms: one for the Mode of Study 1 and one for the Mode of Study 2. In case you register to the course, the link and the key to the platform will be sent by email after the registration period has ended. Open University students registration to exam or seminar: choose exam date/seminar and then send email at the latest 10 days before exam/14 days before seminar [email protected] and we add your registration to Peppi.
- Please check before registering and paying the study fee that course registration is open in Peppi.
- Note that the right to study is granted within 2–5 business days, so you will not be able to activate your user accounts immediately.
- Once the Open University right to study has been granted, you will receive an email with a link to the new student website (instructions for activating university user accounts, etc.).
- Log in according to the instructions to the Open University law studies learning environment (UEF Moodle).
- After registration, you will automatically be included in the implementation/teaching organized by the Department of Law.
- The right to study always ends no later than 30 July 2027, regardless of whether registration is completed in the autumn or spring semester.

You can register for individual course units at a fee of EUR 20 per ECTS credit. The prices are valid for the academic year 2026–2027.

The right to study is granted on a course-by-course basis and always ends no later than 30 July 2027. The costs of acquiring or borrowing course literature are not included in the study fee.
