Sisältö
The course provides for a thorough introduction to European environmental and climate law. The focus of the course is on the general framework of European environmental and climate law with substantive examples.
The course covers following key topics:
- A brief overview of the development of European environmental and climate law
- Central actors, instruments and sources of European environmental and climate law
- European environmental law-making (incl. competences and legal basis)
- Environmental principles
- Interrelationship between the EU and its Member States in relation to European environmental law and climate, and key aspects of law-making (i.e. fundamental principles, competences, legal basis, implementation and enforcement)
- Examples of substantive environmental legislation through examples (i.e. cross-cutting or emerging topics of European environmental and climate policy)

Suoritustavat ja arviointiperusteet
The course is structured around interactive lectures and assignments. Attendance at lectures is mandatory, as they include compulsory interactive exercises. These exercises take place during the lectures. The course requires active self-study and reading before, during, and after the sessions. Students should also be prepared to work on group assignments between lectures. The course concludes with a written exam, which is based on the mandatory course readings.

- Note that the right to study is granted within 2–5 business days, so you will not be able to activate your user accounts immediately.Once the Open University right to study has been granted, you will receive an email with a link to the new student website (instructions for activating university user accounts, etc.).
- Log in according to the instructions to the Open University law studies learning environment (UEF Moodle).
- After registration, you will automatically be included in the implementation/teaching organized by the Department of Law.
- The right to study always ends no later than 30 July 2027, regardless of whether registration is completed in the autumn or spring semester.

You can register for individual course units at a fee of EUR 20 per ECTS credit. The prices are valid for the academic year 2026–2027. Please familiarize yourself with the Open University study fees as well as the payment and cancellation terms: Right to Study and Payment Terms. The right to study is granted on a course-by-course basis and always ends no later than 30 July 2027. The costs of acquiring or borrowing course literature are not included in the study fee.
