The tuition fees range between 8,000 and 10,000 euros per academic year. All new students admitted to international Master’s Degree Programmes in 2021 (September intake) who are required to pay for tuition are eligible to receive a partial tuition waiver. The tuition waiver is 50–70% of the annual tuition fee. For the second year of study, tuition waivers are available to students who have completed a minimum of 55 ECTS of studies included in their degree, during their first year of study.
The University of Eastern Finland will also grant an Early Bird tuition fee deduction of 500 € to students who accept the study place and pay the tuition fees within three weeks of the date the results are
published (for students starting in autumn 2021 by 16.4.2021). This Early Bird deduction does not apply to Erasmus Mundus programmes.
Who will need to pay for tuition?
Fees will be collected from citizens outside the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, starting their studies in Master’s degree programmes conducted in English in August 2017 or after that.
You are exempted from paying tuition fees if you have one of the documents mentioned below. Please note, that you have to send a copy of the document which you use as a basis for exemption.
- Passport or identity card to indicate the citizenship of EU/EEA/Switzerland.
- EU Blue Card in Finland, valid at least until 1 August in the year when the studies begin.
- Continuos residence permit card in Finland, Type A, valid at least until 1 August in the year when the studies begin.
- EU Family Member's Residence Card in Finland, valid at least until 1 August in the year when the studies begin.
- Permanent residence permit card in Finland, Type P permit.
- EU residence permit for third-country citizens with long-term residence permit card in Finland (Type P-EU).
- I have entered Finland as a UK citizen before 1 January 2021 and have proof from Migri that I have registered, or applied to register, my EU right to residence in Finland
The degree programmes conducted in Finnish will remain free of charge regardless of the student’s citizenship. Please read more information about tuition fees in general from Studyinfo.fi and Finnish Immigration Service.
Tuition fees for 2021
The tuition fees in the programmes range between 8,000 and 10,000 euros. There is variation between the faculties and the programmes. For students, the tuition fee will remain the same throughout the entire time of completing their degrees. The exact tuition fee of the programme can be found below and on the programme’s websites. For Erasmus Mundus programmes, please see the programme’s website.
The tuition fee covers the studies included in the degree (personal study plan), studies-related supervision and counselling, and studies-related supporting services offered by the university. In addition, students are entitled to the services of the Finnish Student Health Service by paying the membership fee of the Student Union. The university assists students in finding accommodation.
Brexit and tuition fees
Continuing UK degree students are exempt from tuition fees even after the 1st of January 2021 as long as they change their EU registration in Finland to EU right-to-residence in accordance with the withdrawal agreement (with Migri). This change of status must be applied between the 1st of October 2020 and the 30th of September 2021.
Proof of the EU right to residence (i.e. a relevant residence permit card), or proof that the student has applied for it (from Migri) is sufficient for exemption.
New UK degree students who have arrived in Finland prior to 31st of December 2020 must register their right to residence (in accordance with the withdrawal agreement) between the 1st of October 2020 and the 31st of December 2020 to be exempt from tuition fees. Registration or application before the end of 2020 exempts the student from tuition fees even if they start their studies (in degree programmes taught in English) after the 1st of January 2021. Proof of registration (i.e a relevant residence permit card) or pending application (from Migri) is required.
New UK degree students who arrive in Finland after the 31st of December 2020 are liable to full tuition fee and residence permit requirements like other non-EU/EEA students. The full tuition fee liability also opens the possibility to apply for tuition waivers offered by the University of Eastern Finland.

Tuition waivers
The level of tuition waivers is programme-specific. Please check the detailed information on tuition waivers above. Scholarships (tuition waivers) are applied for when applying for admission to the university, and students are notified of the scholarship decision upon admittance to the university.
In Finland students must be able to cover all their own living costs. Own finances are also one of the requirements for the Finnish residence permit, and finances need to be available permanently on the student's bank account for the whole period the permit is applied for. Financing one's stay and studies in Finland by working is not possible. For more information about residence permit, please see Migri.fi.
Further information on scholarships and instructions on how to apply will be on the programmes’ websites.
