The goal in the Neuroscience Research Community is to understand the disease-specific and common molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases and epilepsy, and to identify biomarkers and novel therapeutic approaches for their prevention and cure by merging biological and computational neurosciences. Currently, there is a clear unmet need for better biomarkers and effective treatments in neurodegenerative diseases and epilepsy, emphasizing the importance to resolve the underlying disease mechanisms in a personalized manner. To carry our research beyond state-of-the-art, NSciRC will combine unique preclinical and clinical datasets of molecular omics to the mechanistic and biomarker studies conducted in humanized disease models, and multilevel analyses performed using neuro-informatics-based approaches. Moreover, studies related to lifestyle and environmental factors will be integrated to these activities. Importantly, NSciRC initiates new collaborations, specifically focusing on data sciences and information technology, neuro-innovations, and neuro-ethics and law to renew in collaboration with the School of Computing, School of Business, and UEF Law School. These actions generate a critical mass, which will create new expertise and impact, take full advantage of existing and forthcoming infrastructures, create new funding opportunities in the global level, and ensure the continuation of world-class neuroscience research at the University of Eastern Finland.
