The University of Eastern Finland celebrates Africa Day on 25 May 2022.
Africa Day is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the African Union, which took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 25th May, 1963. Africa Day is celebrated around the world and is an opportunity to appreciate and mark the African continent’s diverse history and heritage, while acknowledging its cultural and economic potential.
At the University of Eastern Finland, Africa Day represents an opportunity to acknowledge a diverse and important group of scholars and academics who enrich and make a valuable contribution to education and research in and on Africa.
We shall have a series of different activities and communications about our collaborations with our African colleagues, partner institutions and networks. Further information below and on our social media #AfricaDayUEF.

Panel Discussion: Climate change and the effects on environment, wildlife and food security
This panel discussion will consider how climate change has affected environment, wildlife and food security in Kenya. The discussants consider the link between climate change and the ecosystems and environments surrounding communities as well as how food systems have changed. The panel discusses the challenges surrounding wildlife, communities, and food production and how government policies around environment, agriculture and climate change need to evolve in order to address economic and social inequalities.

Home of Heart is a short film that tells a story of urbanized Namibians who miss their childhood homes in the harsh environment of north-central Namibia. The story starts from Namibia but by surprise ends in Finland. Directed by Riikka Notkola. The screening will be opened by Dr. Antti Erkkilä, UEF Department of Historical and Geographical Studies
UEF Library Africa Exhibition
The UEF library celebrates Africa Day with an exhibition in the Kuopio Campus Library as well as a virtual exhibition on UEF-Primo. The exhibition features books, both in print and electronic, related to the African Union, the history and future of Africa.
The exhibition is on Kuopio Campus from 24th May to 23rd June 2022 and on UEF-Primo from 24th May to 12th June 2022.
African Student Stories
This year 2022, we currently have 207 African students enrolled at UEF, 109 master’s students and 98 doctoral researchers. They come from 22 different African countries. Here are some of their stories.

African Student Exchange Stories
UEF collaborates through the Erasmus + Global Mobility programme to implement student mobility with the following African universities in Egypt: Pharos University, Eritrea: National Higher Education and Research Institute; Ghana: Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Ghana, University of Development Studies, and CSIR College of Science and Technology, Morocco: University of Ibn Zohr and Al Akhwayan University and South Africa: STADIO University and University of Limpopo. UEF School of Pharmacy also have an opportunity to complete some of their pharmacy practical training in Ghana.

UEF currently has research and education collaboration activities in 11 African countries. Some of the networks though which we collaborate in Africa include the Southern African Nordic Centre (SANORD) and the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture’s global pilot programmes: the EDUCase platform, the Southern Africa Finnish Network for Health and Wellbeing (SAFINET), the Global Innovation Network for Teaching and Learning (GINTL) and the Finnish Africa Platform for Innovation.

UEF is also a member of the Finnish University Partnership for International Development (UniPID) to support engagement with Africa and other parts of the Global South. Some examples of the support provided to enhance this collaborations include:

‘Ecosystem Restoration in the Tropics and Climate Change’ together with the CSIR College of Science and Technology in Ghana. Registration opens in January 2023.

UniPID Infobank is a multidisciplinary expert and project database with researcher profiles and collaborative project descriptions to facilitate knowledge exchange, communication and cooperation opportunities.
FinCEAL + partnership building support has been provided to build networks like the Global Foodnet with partners in Kenya, South Africa and Peru.

Dr Friday Agbo, who's just finished his PhD, tells us about his doctoral research, which focused on how to teach computational thinking to novice computer science students. Satu Järvinen, on the other hand, has just started her research. The aim of her doctoral thesis is to understand the opportunities and challenges of skills micro certification in Africa.
