The Sustainability Transformation Doctoral Education Pilot (SusTra) offers open Studia Generalia lectures in autumn 2025. The best experts in the field offer the lecture series, tackling the pressing sustainability challenges we face. These 14 online lectures will provide impactful insights into creating a sustainable life and society across various domains, including work, business, leadership, administration, legislation, social imagination, well-being, and education.
These Studia Generalia lectures are based on an open Sopuli PhD course organised by SusTra Doctoral Education Pilot, a collaboration of 10 universities and Finnish Environment Institute SYKE, www.uef.fi/sustra

  • Theme of the lecture: The lecture presents the concept of cultural sustainability transformation, which is based on scientific understanding of planetary boundaries, and combines theories of ethnology and cultural heritage studies as well as theories and methodology of participatory futures research. In relation to cultural sustainability transformation, culture is understood as an interactive part of nature and a transformative power, giving possibilities to mitigate global ecological crisis, e.g. by using the method of Heritage Futures Workshop.
  • Katriina Siivonen is senior university lecturer in futures studies, adjunct professor of cultural heritage research, and PhD in European ethnology at University of Turku. She combines futures research, cultural heritage research and sustainability science into a transdisciplinary entity in her work. Through more than 25 years of research, she has developed the study of cultural sustainability transformation and heritage futures into a thematic research area integrated into society.
