Certificate Programme for Kindergarten Special Education Teachers

The Certificate Programme for Kindergarten Special Education Teachers is a specialisation opportunity for students who have completed Kindergarten Teacher Education. The programme provides students with professional competences and qualifications to work in the field of special education in early childhood and preschool education.

Students who wish to enroll in this programme must meet one of the following prerequisites:

  1. qualified kindergarten teacher status, or a Bachelor of Arts (Education) degree in Kindergarten Teacher Education, or a Master of Arts (Education) degree in Education, focusing especially on early childhood education, or
  2. a polytechnic degree in social and health care completed after 2005 (Act No. 272/2005 on Qualification Requirements for Social Welfare Professionals, section 7) including studies in early childhood education and social pedagogy (60 ECTS) and a university-level basic study module (25 ECTS) in preschool and elementary teaching or preschool and elementary education and care.

The scope of the programme is 60 ECTS for persons belonging to category a), and 85 ECTS for persons belonging to category b). The scope of 85 ECTS requires nearly full time studying in Joensuu for the entire academic year.

The studies will be offered during two semesters in 2017–2018 so that it will be possible to finish them at the end of the spring semester 2018. The studies are offered on the Joensuu Campus, and they require full time studying during the academic year in Joensuu for approximately 2.5 months, as well as full-time teaching practice, which can be completed in the students’ home municipalities.

The studies must be started in autumn 2017, and the students are required to complete at least 10 ECTS per academic year, in accordance with the curriculum.

Aiming for a Master of Arts (Education) Degree

Kindergarten teachers who have a Bachelor of Arts (Education) degree can apply to study for a Master of Arts (Education) degree (majoring in Special Education). The Master’s degree will include studies in the Master’s Degree Programme for Kindergarten Special Education Teachers.
