UEF’s operational and financial result is in line with the set targets

The operational and financial result of the University of Eastern Finland for 2023 was good. The result from ordinary activities was almost as planned, and the revenue and expenditure were in balance. The implementation of the strategy continued through the measures of the strategic programmes.

UEF launched Master of Science (Technology) education in the field of technology and natural sciences. The education began in three degree programmes, namely photonics, sustainable technologies and technical physics. A total of 165 students started in the degree programmes in technology.

Last year, UEF carried out an international research assessment. According to the evaluation panel, research is of high quality and some of the research communities carry out world-class research in their field. In addition, the themes of the research communities are clearly socially impactful and the university has, in relation to its size, many interdisciplinary centres of expertise of a high international standard.

“UEF’s operational goals were achieved well, and the financial situation is stable. Based on the results of the activities and the received assessment feedback, our strategy responds very well to changes in the operating environment and, on the other hand, guarantees the long-term development of the university.  Multidisciplinarity and an open operating culture are strengthening at our university, and stakeholders also have trust in UEF’s activities. Thanks to all the staff and students, we have a very strong foundation for success also in the future,” says Rector Jukka Mönkkönen.

In 2023, the University of Eastern Finland awarded 153 doctoral degrees, 1,745 Master’s degrees and 1,396 Bachelor’s degrees. The number of degrees increased from 2022 and the Master’s degree targets were met in almost all fields of education. The publishing activities of the university were at a good level. The realised number of person-years was 2,799. The number of staff has increased moderately in recent years. The number of international staff increased in line with the target, reaching 403 person-years.

The university’s profit for the financial year amounted to EUR 12.8 million, of which the share of unrealised value adjustments was EUR 13.8 million. The actual operational result was EUR –8.8 million. Operational activities are financed from investment income, for which reason the operational result can be budgeted as being negative. The budgeted operational result was EUR –8.1 million, which means that the realised result was almost as planned.

The financial statement for 2023 was discussed by the Board of the University of Eastern Finland on 22 March. The financial statement will be discussed by the University Collegiate Body on 7 May.
