The first YUFE4Postdocs researchers started at the University of Eastern Finland

The unique postdoctoral research training project is part of the YUFE Alliance of nine European universities.

The first postdoctoral researchers of the YUFE4Postdocs project have started their work at the University of Eastern Finland.  The new researcher positions were filled by Ramya Ambikapathi at the Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Nestoras Antoniu at the School of Computing, and Diana Arbelaez-Ruiz at the Department of Geographical and Historical Studies. The second selection round is underway, and the next postdoctoral researchers will start in the fall of 2024. A total of 7 postdocs will be recruited for the project at the University of Eastern Finland.

YUFE4Postdocs is part of the Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE) Alliance, bringing together nine young research-intensive universities. The University of Eastern Finland is the only partner from Finland.

Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, the YUFE4Postdocs project aims to attract and train future proof-researchers, building bridges between academia and society. A total of 51 postdocs in various disciplines will be appointed across the nine universities. They will be offered 36-month appointments and attractive working conditions. Further benefits include personalised supervision, career guidance and a specialist training program focused on ‘Community-Engagement based Research and Innovation’.

Ten city councils and six business organisations will contribute to training development. Among these partners are the City of Kuopio and the North Karelia Chamber of Commerce in Finland.

In the first call, the postdocs were able to freely define their project under the thematic umbrella of ‘urban challenges and opportunities’ with a focus either in sustainability or digital society. In the second call the focus areas were European Identity and Citizen’s wellbeing. The postdocs will carry out their research anchored in a YUFE host university of their choice. As ambassadors of YUFE’s research ecosystem, they will also foster research collaboration with a partner YUFE university.

In April, there will be another call openining in the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions: The Postdoctoral Fellowship (PF). In this call, it is also possible for talented postdoctoral researchers outside of Finland to apply funding to work at UEF. The research topic and the contents of the training program can be freely defined. UEF research services offer support and training for interested applicants and their supervisors.
