The Department of Chemistry at University of Eastern Finland was established in 1972. It has a long experience and an excellent track record in research chemist education. The department with its unique, research oriented curriculum has been recognised as a “Unit of High-Quality Education” by the Ministry of Education.

Department of Chemistry gives university degree education and does research work in major fields of modern chemistry. Department consists of four divisions: Inorganic chemistry, Organic chemistry, Materials chemistry and Physical chemistry. The department has a staff of 60 people and about 250 students. Annually 40 new students start their Master studies.

The annual budget of the department is about 4 million euros, of which outside funding is 50 %.
