Gender, Career and Law: Integrating parenting to the demanding legal career in Finland and Canada

The research project Gender, Career and Law: Integrating parenting to the demanding legal career in Finland and Canada (2016–2018) examines changes in the legal work in late capitalism, work-life reconciliation in the legal profession in civil law countries with relatively generous parental leave policies, and progression and integration in the legal profession.

This project approaches the issue of gender inequalities in the legal profession from the intersections of gender, professional ethos and work-life relations. These intersections are of increasing concern due to the massive influx of women, globalization of legal services, intensification and enterprising of legal work in law firms. Parental leave policies in Finland and in Quebec province have made progress in the recognition of fathers’ rights to paternity and parental leaves, yet the outreach of these leaves to the legal profession has not been yet studied.

The project draws on the analysis of 62 interviews with male and female lawyers in Finland and Quebec province in Canada, which were collected in 2011 (10 interviews) and in 2016 (52 interviews).

The project is conducted at the University of Eastern Finland by the postdoctoral researcher, D.Soc.Sc. Marta Choroszewicz and in collaboration with researchers from Hanken School of Economics (Helsinki, Finland), Teluq/University of Quebec (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) and Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario, Canada).
