A recap of the basic concepts of statistical analysis: mean, median, concepts of variance and deviation, distributions, longitudinal and panel data. The most common explorative single- and multivariate data analysis methods, regression, variance- and covariance analysis and the basics of time series analysis and factor analysis. Defining validity of a statistical model and scientific reporting of results.
Modes of study: E-learning course with exercises and project work.
Teaching methods: Scheduled online lectures and seminars (10 h), exercises and peer group work (45 h), preparation and peer evaluation of the coursework (40 h), independent studying of the lecture material and literature (40 h).
Study materials: Material given in the Digicampus Moodle-environment.
The course gives statistical tools for analysing physical measurement data. During the course students are taught the basic concepts of statistical analysis and the most common explorative analysis methods for measurement data. After the course the student is able to apply these methods to their own measurement data, prove statistically that the selected method is valid for the data in use and report the results in scientific paper or thesis.
Those interested in statistical analysis of measurement data, especially in physics-related problems. Those who need to convince themselves and other people that their measurements are valid. Those seeking to expand their technical understanding towards participation in scientific research and publishing.
The course will be held from Jan 11th to May 23th, 2023. More information, the description and timelines of the course can be found from Peppi study guide.
In their studies, open university students must adhere to the same schedules and study modes as degree students.
Registration opens on Nov 21st, 2022 at 9:00 am and closes on Jan 4th, 2023 at 11:59 pm.
The course is evaluated on a scale of 0-5.
This course is free during the 2022-2023 academic year.
For more information on study fees and payment and cancellation terms, please see: Registration, study fees and right to study | University of Eastern Finland (uef.fi). Study right will cover the lessons and exams.
Fees for purchasing/lending literature are not covered by the University.

From the beginning of 2023 we will move into the new Studyinfo. Courses will be added there in the fall.
1) You will receive an automatic email confirmation for a successful registration. After this our training secretary will complete the activation of your study right and will send, within 7 days, instructions on how to begin your studies, in a separate email.
Please read the instructions carefully so that you can begin your studies on time.
2) Activate your UEF user account. Instructions are included in the email sent to you by our training secretary.
3) Complete Digistartti, it will help you to get to know our digital environments and tools. 91% of students who have completed the Digistartti found it helpful. Instructions are included in the email sent to you by our training secretary.
