Healthy Food in promoting health and wellbeing

The group for studying Food as a mean to promote health and wellbeing is working in vide perspectives of nutrition research. The work spans from investigating the effects of foods, their components and food structures on human physiology to investigating their bioavailability in vitro model systems and in animal models. In addition, the great part of research interest is to understand the interaction between the physiological and psychological aspects of health and wellbeing, and the role of food on it. Here the key element will be the investigation of gut health and the role of microbiota within the interaction. In addition to the methodology currently at the Institute of Public Health and Clinical Nutrition, we currently setting up new methodology and collaborating with internationally acknowledged research groups to gain understanding for:

  • the mechanisms of action for the health benefits of cereal and berry product and their composition and structures
  • bioavailability of proteins from varying origin, and the effect of composition of these foods for the bioavailability, both the promoting and inhibiting factors in the foods
  • how the property of foods are related to the health promotion and disease prevention, and how they are related with low grade inflammation
  • relationship between physiological and psychological aspects of health and if there is role for food in this relationship, with special focus on gut function.

Food Valley collaboration (https://www.ruokalaakso.fi/eng/) with research and development institutes at the area, namely Savonia University of Applied Sciences and Regional Development Company SavoGrow as well as with food companies has a great importance for above mentioned developments. Within the Food Valley, we have an opportunity to set up an open innovation ecosystems, where the discussion and projects within Food Sector aim to enhance the level of science within research, but also bring the research closer to the practical applications of the research results.
