Congratulations on your acceptance to the University of Eastern Finland! We are excited to have you on board. 

Being a new student, you are bound to have questions. These pages contain all the necessary information you need to get started with your studies at UEF, from planning your journey to Finland to the first week of your studies.

Checklist for the new Exchange Students

Before Arrival

  1. Remember to confirm your study place in SoleMOVE.
  2. Find out if you need a visa or a residence permit and if needed apply for one immediately.
  3. Apply for housing as soon as possible. Instructions for applying housing in Joensuu and in Kuopio.
  4. Get an insurance.
  5. Plan your travelling schedule and arrival.
  6. Keep in touch with your student tutor who will contact you a few weeks before the beginning of the semester. Inform your student tutor about your arrival details. Please note that if you are a trainee and arrive during the university holiday period, a staff member from the research group might be welcoming you instead of a student tutor.

After Arrival

  1. Register at the university. Student Union info for Joensuu campus and for Kuopio campus.
  2. Activate your UEF user account.
  3. Participate in the Orientation for International Students.
  4. Meet your academic coordinator to discuss the courses you will take.
  5. Start studying and enjoying the active student life at UEF. See for example the UEF Sports programme in Joensuu and in Kuopio.

Checklist for the new Master's Degree Students

Before Arrival

  1. Confirm your study place as soon as possible but no later than 15 May.
  2. Non-EU/EEA students: pay the first instalment of your tuition fee unless you have been given an exemption from it. 
  3. It is possible to register as a student at UEF at this point if you can pay the Student Union membership fee on-line. If you cannot pay the fee on-line, you can register as a university student after your arrival on campus. Student Union info for Joensuu campus and for Kuopio campus.
  4. Find out if you need a residence permit for your studies in Finland and if needed, submit you application immediately.
  5. Apply for housing as soon as possible. Instructions for applying housing in Joensuu and in Kuopio.
  6. Get an insurance.
  7. Plan your travelling schedule and arrival.
  8. Keep in touch with your programme coordinator.
  9. Keep in touch with your student tutor who will contact you by the end of May. Inform your student tutor about your arrival details.

After Arrival

  1. Register as a student at UEF if you haven't already done so.
  2. Activate your UEF user account.
  3. Participate in the Orientation for International Students.
  4. Start studying and enjoying the active student life at UEF. See for example the UEF Sports programme in Joensuu and in Kuopio.
  5. Visit the Local Register Office (maistraatti)
    -for getting the Finnish personal identity code (if you don't have it on your residence permit)
    -for submitting the Notification of Move
    -non-EU citizens: for having the municipality of residence
  6. Open a bank account if needed.
  7. EU citizens: If you stay in Finland for longer than 3 months, register your stay at Migri.
