The infrastructure of the GMB Omics Centre comprises three entities that are administered by the Genome Center of Eastern Fin-land, the Metabolomics Center and the Bioinformatics Center.
The Genome Center of Eastern Finland carries out genotyping, gene expression studies and DNA sequencing of small, medium-sized and large cohorts. The centre employs several persons. The setup includes a next-generation Illumina NextSeq device that was acquired two years ago. Sample processing is supported by three processing robots, while data processing is supported by a server for computing and data storage. As a chargeable service, the Genome Center of Eastern Finland offers genetic diagnostics for the most important monogenic diseases, as well as pharmacogenomics for the assessment of the effectiveness and side effects of different drug therapies. Moreover, the NextSeq device has enough capacity for all users on the campus, and it offers novel research applications and replaces outdated, long-used methods (exome sequencing, targeted sequencing, gene expression, RNA sequencing, miRNA sequencing).
The Metabolomics Center constitutes part of the infrastructure network of Biocenter Finland. The unit is in charge of national-level services especially in the field of non-targeted metabolomics. In addition to metabolomics analyses, the laboratory carries out targeted concentration analyses of endogenous compounds, especially steroids, as well as pharmaceuticals and proteins. The key equipment includes various mass spectrometers (incl. qTOF-MS and Orbitrap) combined with liquid and gas chromatographs, and NMR machines. The set of equipment also includes HPLC machines using other detection methods and an atom absorption spectrometer. The unit employs several persons.
The UEF Bioinformatics Center caters for and supports the activities of the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Science and Forestry in bioinformatics-related challenges. The Bioinformatics Center offers expert services and training in bioinformatics, data analytics and data management, maintains the server infrastructure and coordinates collaboration between researchers from different fields in bioinformatics-related issues. The server infrastructure is used for scientific computing, storing extensive research materials, managing research projects, and training. The activities of the centre are closely linked to the analysis and management of materials produced by the Genome Center of Eastern Finland and the Metabolomics Center.
