University of Eastern Finland awards a record number of Master’s degrees

The University of Eastern Finland awarded more Master’s degrees in 2019 than ever before in the university’s ten-year history. Last year, a total of 1,650 Master’s degrees, 1,367 Bachelor’s degrees and 146 doctorates were completed at the university.

The number of Master’s degrees has grown significantly, from 1,384 in 2017 to 1,591 in 2018 – and to as many as 1,650 in 2019. Last year was also the second year in a row for the university to exceed its target set for the number of Master’s degrees awarded.

“The target agreed upon with the Ministry of Education and Culture for 2017–2020 is 1,430 Master’s degrees per year, which means that we’ve exceeded the target by more than 200 degrees last year. The University of Eastern Finland is well positioned to carry out the expansions of academic education desired by the Finnish Government, if sufficient funding for these expansions is secured,” Academic Rector Tapio Määttä notes.

The number of Master's degrees grew most in the fields of health and well-being, as well as in social sciences.

The Faculty of Health Sciences awarded 56 doctorates, the faculty of Science and Forestry 47, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies 27 and the Philosophical Faculty 16.
