Efficient push-pull fluorophores utilizing phosphorus electron acceptor units

Light-emitting materials are an important class of compounds, which play a major fundamental role in academic research, technology, and many practical applications we meet in everyday life. Their utilization spans across the areas of photonic devices, smart responsive materials, sensors, and biomedical visualization/diagnostics. The constantly growing needs of the abovementioned fields require judicious molecular design and advanced synthetical approaches to achieve new efficient and tunable optical functionalities.

In his thesis, MSc Andrei Beliaev investigated three facile synthetic routes, which relied on the systematic use of electron-accepting organophosphorus building blocks randomly explored earlier. This largely overlooked approach allowed to construct new families of dyes with impressively diverse photophysical behavior. The obtained results emphasize the great potential and importance of the phosphorus units in the rational design of chromophoric molecular materials of donor-acceptor architecture. The novel molecules demonstrated high efficiency, tunability and adaptivity of the optical characteristics, low toxicity, high stability, and are expected to provide rich opportunities for further development of the field of light-emissive materials.

The doctoral dissertation of MSc Andrei Beliaev, entitled Efficient push-pull fluorophores utilizing phosphorus electron acceptor units will be examined at the Faculty of Science and Forestry. The opponent in the public examination will be Directeur de Recherche, PhD Christophe Lescop, Institut des Sciences Chimiques de Rennes, France, and the custos will be Professor Igor Koshevoy, University of Eastern Finland.
