Finland Fellowship funding is a new option for gifted non-EU/EEA doctoral candidates who are admitted to doctoral studies at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF). The Finland Fellowship consists of salary paid by the University of Eastern Finland and a separate one-off compensation for expenses. The Finland Fellowship funding can be applied in connection to call for Doctoral Researcher positions for year 2024.
Finland Fellowship is funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture and the faculties under question.
The recipients of the Finland Fellowship funding will be employed for the year 2024 to work at the University of Eastern Finland and they will receive a one-off compensation for expenses of € 2 000.
In addition, the faculty grants the recipient at least a one-year more, Doctoral Researcher’s employment contract (for the year 2025). Moreover, there is an option for the faculty to grant the recipient a Doctoral Researcher’s employment contract up to two more years depending on the applied funding period and progress of studies. An employment contract with the University of Eastern Finland requires living in Finland for the duration of the employment.
If you are not a citizen of an EU/EEA country, you may apply for a Finland Fellowship funding. If you have a dual citizenship, both of them must be non-EU/EEA.
Eligible for the funding are those applicants who are new applicants planning on to study for a doctoral degree at the University of Eastern Finland.
The application period for the funding for the year 2024 takes place in two terms during spring 2023 in the Philosophical Faculty and in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies (call opens 11.4.2023). For further information, see the UEF Open positions website.
An applicant for Finland Fellowship funding must apply for a Doctoral Researcher’s position and a right to study for a doctoral degree. The Finland Fellowship funding is applied for with the same application form as the Doctoral Researcher’s position. Please, note to check the corresponding field on the application form.

The Finland Fellowship funding recipients will be selected from those who apply for a Doctoral researcher’s position in the spring 2023 application round in the Philosophical Faculty and in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies.
The funding recipients are selected by the general selection criteria for doctoral researcher’s positions and possible interviews.
The University of Eastern Finland is multidisciplinary and aims to further all its research fields, which may be taken into account when selecting Finland Fellowship funding recipients.
