Admission criteria explained

1. Appropriate Bachelor's degree or equivalent university degree

Minimum three-year Bachelor's degree or equivalent university degree corresponding to at least three years of full-time academic higher education studies with good results in field of Law, Business and Economics or an appropriate field in Social or Administrative Sciences (such as political science, international relations).

The degree must be awarded by an internationally recognised university or by a recognised university of applied sciences or polytechnic.

Applying when you have not yet graduated (conditional applicants)

The programme accepts conditional applications; applicants who have not graduated by the end of the application period but who are about to complete their degrees are eligible. If you have not graduated by the time the application period for the program you are applying to begins, you are required to submit an officially certified copy of your latest transcript of records (please also see the Country specific requirements). If you receive the degree certificate and the final transcript of records later during the application period, it is recommended that you submit them as well.

You should point out the anticipated graduation date on the application and submit the documents you have at the time of applying. Do not wait to receive your final diploma or degree certificate if it is not available during the application period. Depending on the program you are applying to, you may also be required to submit a statement from your home institution in English, Finnish or Swedish, stating the expected date of graduation.

However, the officially certified copy of the Bachelor's or Master's degree certificate (in original language and as translations, if applicable) should be submitted as separately instructed. Proof of the completed degree can be submitted together with the confirmation of accepting the offered study placement.

Requirements to demonstrate that the applicant fulfils the criteria related to previous education

The following requirements apply to submitting the documentation listed below: the completed application form, together with officially certified copies of the degree certificate and transcript of records must be submitted to the university. If the required original documents are not in English, Finnish or Swedish, a complete, literal translation into one of these three languages by an official translator is required.

  • Certified copy of Bachelor's or Master's degree certificate in the original language and a translation of the degree certificate as applicable.
    or
  • Copy of temporary degree certificate in the original language (alternative to degree certificate) and a translation of the temporary degree certificate as applicable.
    and
  • Copy of certificate of graduation in the original language and a translation of the certificate of graduation as applicable.
    and
  • Copy of transcript of records of Bachelor's or Master's degree in the original language and a translation of the transcript of records as applicable.

2. Proof of English language proficiency

To comply with the programme's English language proficiency requirement, applicants must fulfil at least one of the following requirements:

  • Secondary education completed in English language in a Nordic country
  • Secondary education completed in English language in an EU/EEA country
  • Secondary education completed in English language in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom or the United States
  • English as A language with minimum grade Magna Cum Laude Approbatur as part of the Finnish Matriculation Examination

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree completed in English (with the language of study clearly indicated in the degree certificate and transcript of records)

No language test is required from applicants fulfilling one or more of the above criteria. Such applicants may demonstrate their English language proficiency by submitting official copies of the relevant degree certificate and transcript. It is recommended, however, for applicants who have also taken a language test to indicate their test scores when applying.

For applicants demonstrating their English language proficiency with a Bachelor's or Master's degree completed in English, the university retains the discretion to determine whether the degree complies with the programme's English language proficiency requirements. If the degree includes transfer credits from outside the specified country/area or courses in a language other than English, the degree might not be deemed to fulfil the requirement.

Applicants who do not fulfil any of the above criteria must demonstrate their English language proficiency by submitting language test scores together with their application. The language test scores are valid for two years and the test result must be valid during the whole application period. The minimum scores required for admission are:

  • IELTS (Academic): overall 6.5 (minimum 5.5 in writing)
  • TOEFL iBT: 90–92 (minimum 22 in writing)
  • TOEFL pBT: 580 (minimum 4.0 in writing)

If one's language test score is less than required above, one has to take the language test again.
