Studies

The courses run during an academic year, starting in September and finishing in May. There is some contact teaching in these courses, but the main mode of study is independent work online and written assignments. All study materials are available online. The key focus is on self-reflection and examining the materials from a personal viewpoint. All contact teaching takes place on the Joensuu campus.

Autumn Semester 2019

2321104 Introduction to Intercultural Encounters, 5 ECTS (Contact teaching, learning blog)

On completion of the course the successful student will be able to  

  • understand the concepts of interculturalism
  • understand the relevance and meanings of multiculturalism in society
  • recognise challenges of immigrants in society
  • reflect his/her own starting points for multicultural encounters
  • practice intercultural encounters

Course content: Student learns the basics of multicultural encounters (values, attitudes, cultural identity, and interaction). Understands the internationality and multiculturalism as phenomena. Learns the processes of immigration from different viewpoints (e.g. statistics, jurisprudence, integration processes). Becomes familiar with the local operators of his/her own country and becomes familiar with a new culture (literature and interview).

 

2321101 Intercultural Communication Competence, 5 ECTS (kick-off and concluding seminars, learning assignments)

On completion of the course the successful student will be able to

  • identify basic concepts and issues relating to ‘culture’ and intercultural communication
  • apply theories of intercultural communication into his/her own professional context
  • pay attention to his/her own communication skills in working life
  • analyse the role of intercultural communication competence as a professional skill in different work settings

Spring Semester 2020

2321101 Intercultural Communication Competence, 5 ECTS (kick-off and concluding seminars, learning assignments)

2321102 Components of Cultural Multiplicity, 5 ECTS (kick-off and concluding seminars, learning assignments, essays)

After completing this module, the student acknowledges national, linguistic, political, ethnic and religious multiplicity in society and she/he is able to pay attention to the dialogue between different worldviews. She/He is also able to conceptualize cultural understanding and cultural sensitivity and is able to pay attention to cultural sensitivity in her/his own work.

Course content: Cultural diversity in society, cultural diversity sections and their embodiments, dialogue between worldviews, cultural understanding and cultural sensitivity in a work setting.

 

2321105 Ethics in Intercultural Interaction, 5 ECTS (kick-off and concluding seminars, learning assignments, web discussions)

After completing this module, the student recognizes the basic concepts of ethics. She/He is aware of forms of inequality and manifestations of discrimination in society and acknowledges relevant mechanisms in intercultural interaction. She/He is able to act upon the principle of equality in her/his profession and willing to promote equality in her/his work. 

Course content: Equality in society, principles of ethics, equality of opportunity in working life.

 

2321106 Multicultural Project, 5 ECTS (Contact teaching, counselling in small groups, project work, seminar)

On completion of the course the successful student will be able to

  • implement a deep-level project from intercultural topic
  • work in a target-oriented manner in a multicultural operational environment
  • interact successfully in a multicultural environment
  • plan, implement, and evaluate a small-scale project in a multicultural operational environment.

Course content: Student plans a project from an intercultural topic, collects relevant knowledge from different sources, implements a project, evaluates a project and presents the implemented project in a seminar.
