14. Scientific and societal impacts of the own research

  • Regarding the improvement of scientific understanding, Prof. Kellomäki has focused on studying the functioning and structure of boreal forests and their management under changing climate, which will likely change the growing conditions in the boreal forests throughout the world. Focusing the European boreal forests, Prof. Kellomäki has published internationally in total of  346 articles in peer-reviewed journals during his research career during 1970-2017. His Web of Science H-index is 41 (January 3, 2018), representing 29 average citation per item with the total cites of 6955 (4492 without self-citations). The total number of citing articles is 4492 (4281without self-citations). Moreover, he has published a large number of articles in books and related publications (58 items), articles in proceedings (17) and other papers (153) related to forests sciences, for the science community and the public. Several textbooks and training materials are of important part of the publishing activity of Prof. Kellomäki. The most recent book (Kellomäki, S. 2017. Managing boreal forests in the context of climate change – Impacts, adaptation and climate change mitigation. C RC Press. Taylor & Francis Group. Boca Raton, London, New York. 357 p.) summarizes his long-lasted activities on how climate change might effect on the dynamics of boreal forests ecosystem and how to manage the boreal forests for adapting to climate change.
  • Prof. Kellomäki has been a leading scientist in studying the climate change impacts on the boreal forest ecosystems and the sustainable management of the boreal forests under climate change. He has also been nominated by the Academy of Finland to the Academy Professorship for the period 1989-1994 and again for the period 2000-2004. The research team headed by Prof. Kellomäki was further nominated the Centre of Excellence for the periods 1995-1999 and 2000-2005. The studies included unique experiments, where Scots pines, passed their juvenile phase, were grown in the experimental chambers under the elevated temperature and/or atmospheric CO2. At the same time, the studies included intensive eco-physiological modelling, which utilized experimental findings for identifying the long-term effects of climate change and management on the boreal forest ecosystem dynamics with the implications for producing timber and biomass and sequestrating carbon.
  • The research team lead by Prof. Kellomäki has been participating in 21 research projects since 1994, mainly international ones funded by the European Community/European Union and partly by Academy of Finland (e.g. FiDiPro) and the Science Academy of P. R. of China. The Centre of Excellences (CoE) led by Prof. Kellomäki provided an attractive environment both for national and international MSc. and PhD students. Under supervision of Prof. Kellomäki more than 30 students defenced their doctoral thesis focusing on climate change impacts on functioning and structure of boreal trees, ecosystem and management. In total he has supervised nearly 40 PhD students and over 100 M.Sc. students. The CoEs led by Prof. Kellomäki has provided a fruitful environment also for post-doctoral students, including several foreign researchers. In this respect, the collaboration, with several Chinese post-doc students, has been very successful. Prof. Kellomäki has also received the diploma related to the Nobel Peace Prize awarded in 2007 to the International Panel of Climate Change (IPCC) for long-term work for increasing the understanding of climate change impacts and its mitigation possibilities. Prof. Kellomäki participated also in compiling the fourth report of IPCC.
  • Regarding improving the functioning of society and human welfare, the research focus of Prof. Kellomäki has been very important for outlining the future needs in adapting management to climate change. Furthermore, the avoidance of risks, which climate change is likely having in producing timber and biomass for the needs of bioeconomy and sequestrating atmospheric CO2 in mitigating climate change.  In this respect, the doctoral and Post doc training has been very valuable to build the future capacity to meet in a sustainable way climate change in practical management and forestry. The research findings of the team led by Prof. Kellomäki have further been valuable in the recent updating of Guidelines for Finnish forest management for private forestry by Tapio, 2012-2016 and the Finnish Forest Law. The research finding on climate change impacts have further contributed to the preparation of new EU forestry strategy using the ISTO synthesis report on climate change impacts and adaptation measures in the Finnish forestry (Peltola et al. 2012).
  • In addition to research and teaching, Prof. Kellomäki has also participated actively in university and science administration. In this respect, his career initiated in 1981 in the planning professor, whose main task was to establish the training in forest sciences in 1982 and the Faculty of Forestry 1984 at the University of Joensuu. He was the dean of the Faculty of Forestry 12 years and two years the first Vice Rector of the University of Joensuu. In 1980’s and 1990’s, Prof. Kellomäki was close to ten years the member of Research Councils in the Academy of Finland. He was also the head of the National Graduate School of Forest Sciences in 1995- 2010. Prof. Kellomäki worked also an editor of the science publications of the Finnish Society of Forests Sciences in 1970ies. He was also the chairperson of the Society 1992–1993, when the Society and the Finnish Forest Research Institute initiated the collaboration in publishing and renewed the publications. In 2014, Prof. Kellomäki was also nominated to the Honorary Chairperson of the Finnish Society of Forest Sciences for his large contribution in forest sciences.
