The mission of the University of Eastern Finland is to be an internationally recognised research and teaching university which is among the top three most significant universities in Finland and among the leading 200 universities in the world. The high standard of teaching and competitive research of the University of Eastern Finland make it a central actor in the Finnish and international innovation system. Furthermore, a particular aim of the university is to promote the well-being and positive development of eastern Finland through research, education and various forms of collaboration.

Traditionally, the finances of Finnish universities have been closely controlled by the Finnish government. However, with the entry into force of the new Universities Act on 1 January 2010, the universities gained more latitude in the management of their finances to better make use of their income from capital and to supplement their financing with donations and business activities.

The total amount of private donations received by the universities by the end of the year 2010 will affect their public funding, as the Finnish government has committed to more than doubling the amount of the private capital raised. Indeed, private sector donations will thus play a significant role in the universities’ finances.
