Preparations for the University of Eastern Finland

Preparations for the University of Eastern Finland began in February 2007, as a working group led by Professor Reijo Vihko submitted its proposal on intensifying the cooperation between the Universities of Joensuu and Kuopio.

The project for the University of Eastern Finland is one of the Ministry of Education spearhead projects addressing the structural development of higher education institutions.

Project Parties

The project for the University of Eastern Finland has a Management Group, Steering and Monitoring Group, several discipline-specific working groups and an Advisory Board consisting of stakeholder representatives.

Openness and active participation of the staff and students in the preparation of the new university are emphasised in the establishment of the University of Eastern Finland.

The project plan, which among other things defines the working groups to be established, was approved by the University Senate of the University of Joensuu on 23 May 2007 and by the University Senate of the University of Kuopio on 31 May 2007. The University Senates authorised the Rectors to appoint members to the groups and to make any necessary changes to the group composition.
