International Cooperation

The University of Eastern Finland is an international, research-intensive university with an extensive network of foreign partners. The university has concluded bilateral agreements of cooperation with approximately 70 universities abroad. Furthermore, the university is involved in several international networks and discipline-specific projects, and the university’s teaching and research staff and students are active in participating in various mobility programmes.

In cooperation with Nanjing University in China, the university has established the Sino-Finnish Environmental Research Centre (SFERC). The research centre celebrated its opening ceremonies on 18 May 2009 and is focused on research addressing forestry, energy and environmental issues. The SFERC is the first satellite campus ever to have been founded in China by Finnish universities.
In the field of information technology, the university is planning to establish a satellite campus at Meraka Institute in South Africa by the end of year 2009.
The university addresses cooperation with Russia for example through the Finnish-Russian Cross-Border University, CBU. Strengthening and expanding the operations of the CBU are also included in the Ministry of Education Strategy for the Internationalisation of Higher Education Institutions in Finland in 2009–2015.

A total of 500 international degree students study at the University of Eastern Finland each year, and the university hosts nearly 400 international exchange students. Moreover, a total of 300 students go on student exchange each year. The university offers 24 international Master’s degree programmes and several other international study programmes.

The university takes part in various mobility programmes, including Erasmus (EU countries), Nordplus/Nordlys (the Nordic and Baltic countries), Campus Europae (Europe), ISEP (mainly the United States), UNC-EP and Fulbright (the United States), FIRST (Russia), and North-South-South (Africa).
Moreover, the university has concluded several bilateral student exchange agreements with different countries. Furthermore, international internship programmes are available for the students.
