University of Eastern Finland and National Institute for Health and Welfare have together developed a multidisciplinary training course for health care professionals on nicotine addiction, tobacco cessation and the health effects of tobacco.
This internet-based course is aimed at both undergraduate and postgraduate training as well as continuous education of all groups of health care professionals.In order to be able to help smokers to quit all health professionals, including physicians as well as nurses, dentists and pharmacists should be familiar with the methods of smoking cessation and the addiction process, including a better understanding of the quitting process from the smokers perspective.
By being confident about their own role, skills and possibilities in smoking cessation as well as being familiar with the role of other groups of health professionals it is possible to build a functional care pathway to assist smokers in the quitting process.
