Sovelletun fysiikan laitos | Ari Laaksonen, PhD, ProfessorAri Laaksonen received his MSc degree in 1990 and PhD in 1992, both from the University of Helsinki, Finland. In 1993-95 he worked as a visiting scholar at the University of Chicago, and in 1996-97 as a junior fellow of the Academy of Finland, positioned at the University of Helsinki.He started as professor of environmental physics in University of Kuopio in 1998. Since 2008 he has been on a partial leave of absence from UEF, working at the Finnish Meteorological institute as the head of Climate Change Research Unit. Ari is the leader of Aerosol Physics Research Group. His main research interests include nucleation of atmospheric aerosols and aerosol-cloud-climate interactions. He has published more than 140 peer reviewed articles and over 200 conference papers. He is co-editor of Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, associate editor of Journal of Geophysical Research (Atmospheres), and editorial board member of Journal of Aerosol Science. He was the coordinator of the EU-funded 5th framework project QUEST (Quantification of aerosol nucleation in the European boundary layer), and has been a Principal Investigator in four other projects funded by the EU, and in ten projects funded by the Academy of Finland. He has advised 10 Ph.D. and 18 M.Sc. theses. His teaching experience includes courses in Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry, Aerosol Physics, Climate Change, Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics.
