Higher cerebral functions in aging and dementia has been a focus of research in the Department of Neurology  for over 20 years. At the moment, the topics of research are pathogenesis, risk factors, molecular genetics, functional genomics, neuroimaging, neuroanatomy and pharmacology of Alzheimer's disease.

The center has extensive population-based cohorts for studying prevalence and risk factors of dementia and memory disorders. Moreover, follow-up series of dementia patients enable various approaches of clinical research. Autopsy studies in clinically documented patients, drug trials, and markers of the cerebrospinal fluid are included in the expertise of the center.

The center has a brain bank for neuropathological studies in neurodegenerative diseases.
