The Department of Neurology at Kuopio Campus is a research center with experience in basic and clinical neurosciences.
Researchers and staff are totaling 60. Our PhD students have produced 99 doctoral dissertations. Annually, we produce about 90 publications in international scientific journals. See more about our research - link also at left.

The research groups in Canthia Building focus on basic mechanisms, prevention, drug and clinical research of degenerative brain diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease, stroke and epilepsy.
Most population-based surveys and drug trials are run at the Brain Research Unit in Clinical Research Centre.
There are also facilities for genetics and biomarker analysis for searching new risk genes using single nucleotide polymorphism analysis and functional studies.

Interview in Saima/Careers: Professor Miia Kivipelto: Early detection is key in Alzheimer’s disease |
Today, Professor Miia Kivipelto is an internationally recognised Alzheimer’s researcher working at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm and the University of Eastern Finland in Kuopio. Her research focuses on charting the risk factors and prevention possibilities of Alzheimer’s disease. She also studies the early detection and treatment possibilities of the disease. > Read more |
Interview in Saima/Careers: PhD Jayashree Viswanathan: Taking a leap - from Parkinson's to Alzheimer's |
“The brain is the most fascinating and enigmatic organ, and we know so little about it,” PhD Jayashree Viswanathan says. But she does know something about the topic, having just defended her dissertation on the genetic and functional characterisation of genes associated with Alzheimer’s disease, here at the University of Eastern Finland. > Read more

Itä-Suomen yliopiston Alzheimerin taudin tutkimusryhmien asiantuntijuus, korkeatasoiset tutkimusaineistot ja laaja kansainvälinen verkostoituminen muodostavat AlzPoint-hankkeen perustan. AlzPoint tarjoaa näillä verkkosivuilla tietoa Alzheimerin taudista ja tutkimuksesta kaikille aiheesta kiinnostuneille. |
| The launch of the International Genomics of Alzheimer’s Project (IGAP) |
It's a collaboration formed to discover and map the genes that contribute to Alzheimer’s disease – was announced today by a multi-national group of researchers, including investigators at the Department of Neurology, University of Eastern Finland. The collaborative effort, spanning universities from both sides of the Atlantic, will combine the knowledge, staff and resources of four consortia that work on Alzheimer’s disease genetics. > Read more |
