ILMARI – Aerosol physics, chemistry and toxicology research unit

ILMARI research infrastructure offers versatile possibilities for studies on characteristics of emissions and aerosol particles, their atmospheric effects and toxicological properties. The laboratory is equipped with various biomass combustion appliances and reactors, dynamometers for engine experiments, and nanoparticle reactors. The emissions from these systems can be injected into a transformation chamber and a flow tube reactor, in order to study the atmospheric aging of emissions. Living cells and animals can be exposed to both fresh and aged emissions in an air-liquid interface cell exposure system and an animal exposure chamber, in order to study the health-related toxicological responses of fresh and aged aerosols from different sources. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art sampling, dilution and analysis techniques for aerosol and gas-phase characterization.
