My research is inspired by a fascination in the interactions occurring between species across multiple trophic levels.  I am particularly interested in the role of plant-derived volatile chemicals as cues promoting behavioural responses in arthropods and defence responses in other plants.  I conducted my PhD studies at Rothamsted Research, UK, where I researched the behaviour of the aphid parasitoid, Diaeretiella rapae, in response to aphids with differing levels of adaptation on their host plant.  During this project I developed a passion for studying insect behaviour and the chemistry that structures so much of the ecology surrounding plants.  Upon completion of my PhD I moved to the University of Kuopio, now the University of Eastern Finland, where I worked as a postdoctoral researcher on numerous projects.  My recent research has focussed on exploring questions related to chemical ecology in a broader environmental context.  I am particularly interested in the effects that tropospheric ozone has on volatile-mediated interactions, especially on host location by predators and parasitoids and on plant-plant communication.
