Molecular medicine - Drug research - Biotechnology

Biocenter Kuopio (BCK) was founded in 2007 to build up a multidisciplinary research network between different actors in the fields of molecular medicine and related drug research and biotechnology. Principal aim is to develop the quality of molecular medicine research and enhance the translation of scientific innovations into clinic and entrepreneurship. The foundation was supported by the European Union, European Regional Development Fund, and European Social Fund.

The aim is to reinforce

  • research cooperation between different disciplines across faculty boundaries
  • develop business operations in the Northern Savo and Karelia region
  • support the activities of the centres of expertise

BCK is in charge of developing research, operating environment and education on the areas of leading research priorities of the university:

  • diabetes and cardiovascular diseases
  • gene transfer technology and gene therapy
  • neurosciences
  • nuclear receptor research
  • bone and cartilage research
  • drug research and development
  • nutritional genomics
  • molecular pharmacology
  • animal biotechnology
  • cancer research
  • structural biology
  • bioinformatics supporting the above mentioned research areas

Biocenter Kuopio is also an active member in the Biocenter Finland, which is a national network of biocenters.
