Studies in Pharmacy

The graduate students of the School of Pharmacy aspire to one of the two pharmaceutical academic degrees, the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (in Finnish 'farmaseutti') and the Master of Science in Pharmacy (in Finnish 'proviisori').  The education qualifies for the pharmaceutical occupations in Finland, for which a licence must be applied from the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health. The teaching in  pharmacy curricula is mainly in Finnish and is planned for Finnish citizens or permanent residents, and one of the requirements of the professional licence is sufficient conduct of a national language (Finnish or Swedish). However, we have an active student exchange program and we accept foreign students to carry out part of their graduate studies at our School. Further information on these possibilities and related procedures are available through the Office for International Affairs of the University. Part of our courses for pharmacy graduate students are provided fully or partly in English.

The Faculty also has an international Master of Science program in General  Toxicology and Environmental Health Risk Assessment. This education is given fully in English and welcomes applicants worldwide.

Post graduate education for the Ph. D. degree in Pharmacy is given in all of the disciplines taught in theSchool. The Ph.D. education is given in seven disciplines. Each discipline has a coordinator, who is in charge of the planning and development of the teaching in the discipline. Below is a list of the disciplines and the coordinators.

  • Biopharmacy, Coordinator Professor Paavo Honkakoski
  • Clinical Pharmacy, Coordinator Professor Tapani Keränen
  •  Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Coordinator  Professor Seppo Auriola

A major part of the the Ph.D. education consists of the research-based thesis focused on one of the disciplines, and is carried out in one of the research of the school. Accordingly, the research group leaders are mainly in charge for recruiting and accepting the students for post graduate education.
