Ecological Research Institute | Large Lake Research CooperationWater bodies are an essential part of Finnish nature and they are utilized and impacted in many ways. There are nearly 50 large lakes in Finland (surface are exceeding 100 km2), representing about half of the total number of large lakes in the whole Europe. Coordination committee for research on large Finnish lakes The Ecological Research Institute takes part in the activities of the Coordination committee for research on large Finnish lakes. The committee is appointed by the Ministry of the Environment and the committee members represent several universities and research organisations subject to three government ministries. The purpose of the committee is to promote large lake research and training, and support cooperation between operators in this field. The institute is responsible for administrative and secretarial assignments in the committee. The scientists responsible for the large lakes research are Paula Kankaala and Markku Viljanen. R/V MuikkuThe Ecological Research Institute coordinates the use of the research vessel R/V Muikku. R/V Muikku is a modern and well-equipped vessel with multiple research and sampling facilities and a professional crew.
