Ecological Research Institute

The Ecological Research Institute (ETI) is a research unit focusing on water and fish research, wetland ecology, palaeoecology and ringed seal research. In addition to the actual scientific research, the Institute offers research services. The Institute is part of the Department of biology of the Faculty of Science and Forestry.

The academic staff includes 10-15 scientists and the institute has a competent technical and laboratory staff. The modern research facilities available at the institute include a wide range of laboratory and analytical instrumentation, sampling equipment, all terrain vehicles and motor boats. The research vessel R/V Muikku, which provides excellent facilities for simultaneous physical, chemical, hydrological, biological and fisheries research is utilized principally for biomonitoring and other investigations especially on Lake Saimaa, one of the largest freshwater lake systems in Europe. Our research projects are funded by the University of Joensuu, various government bodies (ministries, provincial and municipal administration), the Academy of Finland, various foundations, industry and also the EU.
