IUFRO 3.08.00 Small-scale Forestry Conference 2018

Transformations Towards a New Era in Small Scale Forestry

Vaasa, Finland, 11–13 June 2018

– with a post-conference excursion in the Umeå region of Sweden

See Conference Flyer (2-page pdf)

The conference will take place in Vaasa, which is a sunny university city on the west coast of southern Finland. The region is of particular geological and ecological significance. Finland and Sweden are still experiencing a rebounding from the last ice age some 10 thousand years ago, and new shoreline is added to the countries each year, most notably in this area. Many examples of newly forested land can be seen on this High Coast/Kvarken Archipelago World Heritage Site.

Additionally, Finland is at the leading edge of sustainable and efficient forestry and there will be many opportunities to learn more about these expertise during the conference, including the half-day in-conference excursion guided by region’s experts in forestry and wood-based businesses.

Moreover, as a land dominated by boreal forests, a conference hosted in Finland provides the perfect opportunity for participants worldwide to observe one of nature’s harshest and most beautiful forest types first hand during the time of the long summer nights approaching solstice.

Finally, the post-conference tour will take participants by ferry to Umeå and its surroundings in Sweden, where the lovely nature, traditions, and highly developed forestry organization of Sweden will be illustrated.
