Conferment Ceremony of the University of Kuopio 2010
The Seventh Ceremonial Conferment of doctoral degrees took place on Kuopio campus during June 10th to June 12th, 2010. 138 young doctors who had graduated from the University of Kuopio were promoted as doctors in a festive ceremony. Also 16 distinguished individuals chosen by the University of Kuopio were promoted as Honorary Doctors.
The doctor's robe of the University of Kuopio has been used in the ceremonies. The robe is one of the very distinct conferment traditions unique to the University of Kuopio. Before the first Ceremonial Conferment of Doctoral Degrees of 1978, there was a vigorous debate on what doctoral insignia the University of Kuopio should select. One of the Conferrers of Degrees, Professor Osmo Hänninen, suggested that the robe would represent a more peaceful academic symbol than the traditional sword. The robe also highlights the long traditions of the crafts and textile industry of Kuopio.
The doctoral robes are sewn modelled on the robe worn by the University Rector and created by Marjatta Nevala. The black robe is adorned with the yellow cord of the Savo region. Inside the robe there is a A4 size pocket for the doctor's personal belongings, for example, notes for a speech. The doctor's spouse or the accompanying friend symbolically have embroided the doctor's name inside the collar of the robe during the Robe Inauguration Ceremony.
