Teaching organized by Lab Animal Centre
Persons involved in laboratory animal experiments must be adequately educated and trained before they perform proceduresto animals and persons designing procedures and projects must have received instructions in a scientific discipline relevant to the work being undertaken and shall have species-spesific knowledge (Diretive 2010/63/EU, Finnish legislation Law 497/2013, 8§ and Ttatute 564/2013, 18§). Staff carrying out procedures shall be supervised in the performance of their tasks until they have demonstrated the requisite competence. An EU working document 19-20-2-2014 on the development of a common education and training framework to fulfil the requirements under the Directive.
This is due to the new legislation 1.8.2013. Renewal of legislation is based on the Directive 2010/63/EU of the European parlament and of the EU Council.
According to the Directive 2010/63/EU all persons involved in laboratory animal experiments shall be adequately educated and trained before they start their work with animals. Staff/students shall be supervised in the performance of their tasks until they have demonstrated the requisite competence. Education and training is species specific.
Persons working with lab animals will be categorised accordingly:
1) Persons carrying out procedures on animals (EU: Function A)
Carry out actual procedures on animals; researchers, students, technicians
Take the 4510031 Course for persons carrying out procedures (13.4.2015-24.4.2015 in Finnish, 4.4.2016-22.4.2016 in English)
Course consists of 2 credits of theory and 0,5 credits per species (mouse and/or rat)
Accepted accomplishment of the whole course will give the competence to independently carry out procedures on rats and/or mice and competence to kill rats and/or mice (Function D)
It is recommended to choose species specific hands on of that species that one will use in future on projects. One can complete own competence later with species specific theory and practicals. LAC strives to organize one day additional courses (theory and practicals) for pigs and rabbits.
2) Persons designing procedures and projcets (EU: Function B)
Researchers who design and supervise projects
This competence is equal to the one earlier achieved by the Competence course for researchers
Take the 4510032 Course for persons designing procedures and projects (21.9.2015-22.10.2015, course language yearly in English)
Module I 4510031 must be accomplished and have 180 credits of previous studies
3) Persons taking care of animals (EU: Function C)
Laboratory animal care takers
4) Persons killing animals (EU: Function D) included in Course 4510031 or separately
Only euthanize animals e.g. for tissue sampling
Take the Course of basic handling and ethanasia
Will be organized when necessary
