Minor Subject Studies in Special Education

Special Education as a Minor Subject

The basic, intermediate and advanced studies in Special Education are available as minor studies to all students of the University of Eastern Finland.

By the end of the basic study module (25 ECTS) in Special Education, students will be able to identify and define the foundations of education and teaching and their social role from the perspective of special education. Students will have familiarised themselves with special education and its importance over the course of life.

After completing the basic study module, students can enroll in the courses of the intermediate study module (35 ECTS).  By the completion of the intermediate study module, students will be able to determine key learning difficulties and identify factors behind them. Students will be able to use theoretical and methodical knowledge in their research report.

After completing the intermediate study module, students can enroll in the advanced courses. By the end of the advanced study module (60 ECTS), students will be able to analyse the significance of the operating and learning environment in connection to individual learning, growth and development based on theoretical knowledge. Students will be able to apply their knowledge of different research methods and research communication in the planning and conducting of their own research.

Minor subject studies in Special Education do not lead to a teaching qualification (cf. Teaching Qualifications Decree, No. 986/1998).
