International networks and partnerships

The University of Eastern Finland participates in a variety of international networks, including the Association of Finno-Ugric Universities (AFUU), Campus Europae (EUF-CE), the Baltic Sea Region University Network (BSRN), and the International Student Exchange Programme (ISEP). Furthermore, the university is a member of the Nordic Centre at Fudan University (NCF), the Nordic Centre in India (NCI), and the Southern African-Nordic Centre (SANORD) networks.In addition, the university has concluded partnership agreements with the United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP. The university's faculties and academic departments are also active members of several field-specific netorks.

The university participates actively in many research and educational cooperation programmes of the European Union, the Nordic Council of Ministers, and other international funding agencies. Furthermore, university coordinates FIRST, HEI ICI and North-South-South projects sponsored by the Finnish Centre for International Mobility, CIMO. Student and teaching staff exchanges with European universities are mainly realised within the Erasmus+, Nordplus, FIRST and Campus Europae programmes. With North American universities, student and teaching staff exchanges are mainly carried out within the framework of the ASLA-Fulbright programme and the International Student Exchange Programme, ISEP. Student exchanges with universities in the Arctic areas are realised within the North2North programme. In addition, the university has concluded bilateral agreements of cooperation with numerous universities all over the world.                                                                                                                                                         

Every year, about 1,400 international students find their way to the University of Eastern Finland. For international exchange and degree students, the university offers a variety of international study programmes taught in English.The University of Eastern Finland is also active in transnational education.  

The university has established, together with Nanjing University, the Sino-Finnish Environmental Research Centre, SFERC, in Nanjing, China. SFERC specialises in research relating to forestry, energy and environmental issues.
