Department of Physics and Mathematics

Our department continues the strong tradition in Physics and Mathematics research and education developed almost 50 years ago in former University of Joensuu. The high level has been recognized in international evaluations and the aim is to bring our expertise to a new level.

The operation of the department is based on three main areas: Mathematics, Photonics, and Physics and mathematics teacher education.  In all of these areas we also provide education which is based on  high-level research.

We have about 80 people working in the department, including 11 professors. Our laboratory facilities are excellent enabling experimental optical nanotechnology to complete our strong theoretical knowledge. Facilities are also used extensively in education, and the services are provided to our partners.

We educate Physics and mathematics teachers, Mathematicians, and Physicists having their expertise in Photonics. In Photonics we also have an international MSc programme in Photonics.
