Master of science programmes in forest and wood sciences

UEF School of Forest Sciences is one of the best academic units in forest sciences. We are internationally known for our excellence in research and all our teaching is based on contemporary scientific findings. If you are interested in how forest can be managed for the benefit of the global development and how they can be utilised to alleviate climate change or to solve the challenges related to energy supply, you have come to a right place.

We offer four MSc programmes: MSc in Forest Sciences (in Finnish language), MSc in Forestry incl. sub-programmes:  CBU (English) and TransFor-M (English), MSc in European Forestry (English) and MSc in Wood Materials Science (English). Furthermore, students studying in the MSc in Forest Sciences can choose one of the four specialisations in management and ecology of forest ecosystems; forest mensuration and planning, forest economics and policy; and forest energy and wood technology.

MSc in Forest Sciences - Management and ecology of forest ecosystems

The studies focus on the structure and function of forest ecosystems and on the management principles of boreal forests. Courses cover wide variety of topics, such as the succession and growth dynamics, energy and matter fluxes, carbon sequestration, biodiversity and biotic and abiotic forest health risks and challenges. In particular, the aim is to understand how changing climate, soil properties and other environmental factors affect forest ecosystems.

 

Ecosystem principles are applied to manage the forests. In the management-oriented studies, the focus is on sustainable use and, in particular, on how the changing environmental conditions may affect management in different temporal and spatial scales. Studies can be tailored individually, based on student's interests and professional aims. To facilitate this, courses are divided into four modules: forest ecology and biodiversity, ecology and management of forest soils, forest management and biomass production, and risks for forest health. The compulsory study minor can be chosen quite freely to support these modules and individual interests and specialisation.  


The studies give excellent abilities to work on several fields that are related to forest research or to practical management of forests. Such posts are available in several organisations that operate in forest and environmental management, both in private and public sectors. Graduates have traditionally found jobs also internationally.

MSc in Forest Sciences - Forest mensuration and planning

Specialising in forest mensuration and planning provides the option to study from an entire chain of interrelated, professional processes ranging from forest inventory to the management decision-making for forest resources. Career paths associated with these studies include both domestic and international work in forest planning, forest inventory, remote sensing, and the development of forest information systems.

 

Forest mensuration science includes mensuration, modelling, and inventory methods. The learning and study of remote sensing techniques also plays a very important role within mensuration education. Complementary minors for students studying mensuration include those that are useful for forest resource mapping and for updating inventory data, like statistics and computer science.

Forest planning analyses alternative forest management options using forest inventory data and models developed by forest research. A central task of planning is to predict the consequences of management alternatives, so that treatments that best fulfil the objectives of forest owners and other stakeholders are applied. Modern forestry is multi-functional and therefore management objectives may include non-timber benefits such as amenities, biodiversity conservation, and some environmental effects possible through forestry operations. Various optimisation methods can be used to schedule the best treatments for forest stands.

Forest information system and technology courses cover topics ranging from applied geoinformatics to information technology (IT) -methods applied to forestry. Since geographical information system (GIS) technology is now an important part of the operational work and data management of the forest industry; understanding modern IT technology and the ability to design new GIS tools are also important parts of the work of forestry professionals. These skills and knowledge give an excellent background for developing forest sector operations within the different fields of expertise in the forest sciences.

MSc in Forest Sciences - Forest economics and policy

Forest economics and policy specialisation provides students with the opportunity to concentrate their studies on economic production and consumption of forest-related services and goods, and the courses of action to regulate them that have been adopted and pursued by governments and other organisations. It is also possible to further specialise in the multiple-uses of forests and the practice of forestry in Russia.

 

Future forest economists are given a good foundation in multi-objective forest planning, the ability to do economic and social analysis of the forestry sector, and understanding of the different forms of use for forests. Studies based in business management science provide specific skills to analyse and develop the competitiveness and intellectual capital of forest-related businesses and organisations. Graduates can be employed in private and public sector organisations for tasks including business management, rural development, and market and business research.

Forest policy education prepares students to assess the effectiveness and impact of regulatory plans for action, as well as the ability to understand and assess domestic and international political processes that have an effect on forest use. Forest policy expertise is needed in forestry administration at the local, national, and international levels, as well as in positions where the social responsibility and public relations duties of various organisations are managed. Forest policy education, supplemented with forest and environmental law studies, creates a foundation for a career in civil service.

In studies of the multiple-use of forests, students learn about the role of forests in culture, as a resource for personal and commercial recreation, and in providing non-wood forest products. These studies also assess the different environmental benefits and services of forests and their economic value and importance, as well as the capacity of a forest to provide these benefits and services. These studies can be enhanced with the selection of an appropriate minor from another field.

Russian forestry studies provide students with a diverse understanding of Russia's forests, forestry practices, and forest industries. Students learn the basics of Russian forestry terminology, and also experience actual practices in Russia. Basic education in Russian-language is important for the development of this expertise.

MSc in Forest Sciences - Forest energy and wood technology

Forest-related technology education focuses on forest work, wood procurement, and production processes for renewable materials. The integration of wood and bioenergy harvesting has been a recent focus. These educational tasks are accomplished in association with research activities, through the cooperation of the School of Forest Sciences’ researchers, teachers, and students; as well as personnel from external research organisations and businesses.

 

A student of technology does not need to be a top mathematician, but should have interests in physical sciences, as well as in the development of his or her own analytical skills. Wood procurement’s management decision-making, information systems, and the control of integrated wood and energy supply chains are examined through a framework of operations analysis research and logistics. Study of forest work includes the investigation of the methods, tools, operators, and machinery for wood harvesting and silviculture. Education in wood technology and forest products engineering discusses wood structure and properties, as well as other wood-based material properties and the manufacturing technologies for these products. Studying the engineering of forest products is approached from a traditional natural science perspective, providing the groundwork for understanding and development of these technologies.

Graduates of energy technology, forest products engineering, and forest technology are explicitly well prepared to serve industry, since their studies help them development strong logistical, technical, and economic knowledge and competence. The careers of graduates have frequently had research, design, and international development cooperation components, as well as international marketing and communications tasks. Recent, and regular, employment for previous graduates has included managing wood procurement and harvesting.

MSc European Forestry

Master´s degree programme in European Forestry is one of the best European master's programmes in the field of forest sciences. MSc European Forestry offers the students with a global perspective to European forestry and prepares them for international labour markets. MSc European Forestry is a joint curriculum, offered by six European universities.

MSc Forestry (CBU)

Master's degree programme in Forestry (CBU) is a part of the distinguished Finnish-Russian Cross-Border University (CBU). MDP in CBU FOR is offered as a collaboration of University of Eastern Finland (the coordinating university) with three universities in Russia.

 

The partner universities in Russia are Petrozavodsk State University, Saint Petersburg State Forest Technical University and Bauman Moscow State Technical University. The focus of the studies is on ecologically, economically and socially sustainable use of forest resources. The studies are strongly oriented to the needs of future international labor markets. The graduates from this programme will have capacity and competence to work in the international field of forestry as well as to undertake research and to assume various specialist positions in new environments.

MSc Transatlantic Forestry

Master's degree programme in Transatlantic Forestry is our joint programme with Canadian universities. One year of the studies is carried out in Finland and the other in one of our Canadian partner universities: University of Alberta, University of New Brunswick or University of British Columbia.

 

Students will learn about modern sustainable forestry and environmental management approaches that are sensitive to cultural differences. Students acquire an enhanced global view that accommodates multi-cultural perspectives about economic and environmental issues.

MSc Wood Materials Science

Master's degree programme in Wood Materials Science is an interdisciplinary programme and we are in quest for learning everything about wood. MSc Wood Materials Science trains the next generation of professionals to meet the growing demand for experts in the utilisation of wood as a renewable materials.

 

We create links between wood as a raw material and the properties of final products such as bio-based materials, chemicals and energy derived from renewable biological resources. Our graduates are employed by e.g. R&D departments of enterprises that use wood as raw material, research institutes and consultancy companies.

Eligibility criteria: Good command of English language (B2 level = IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90, PTE 59) and BSc in forestry, chemistry, biology, physics or related field.
