Forest management and ecosystem services

The research focus in forest management and ecosystem services is on how the management and utilization of forests and changing climate affect the carbon dynamics, structure of forests and different ecosystem services and various risks to forests. We are interested in forest biomass production and carbon sequestration and how these are affected by natural disturbances such as storms, snow extremes and drought.

Although our main interest is in boreal forests, many of the questions that we address are global. We focus on adaptive management strategies that are needed under the changing operative environments and possibility to mitigate the climate change by adapting forest management and forestry.  We utilise both experimental studies and modelling of forest ecosystems such as mechanistic wind damage risk modelling.
