Dr. Jarkko Suhonen, jarkko.suhonen (at), Docent, Research Manager

My research interests include online and blended learning in higher education, design research in educational technology, computing education, and ICT4D. I have published over 90 peer-reviewed scientific publications in scientific journals, conferences, workshops, and chapters of books. Currently, I'm the co-ordinator of the IMPDET-LE online doctoral study programme at UEF, and I serve on committees for various conferences and special issues of journals, and act as a reviewer in several scientific journals. I received my MSc degree (Computer Science) from the University of Joensuu, Finland in 2000 and my PhD degree (Computer Science) from the University of Joensuu in 2005. I have also a secondary school's teacher's qualification in Computer Science and Mathematics.

Dr. Ilkka Jormanainen, ilkka.jormanainen (at), Senior Researcher

Ilkka's major research fields are computational thinking, educational data mining, educational robotics, technology education in K-12 settings, as well as ICT for Development. He was recently leading the ICT for Education in Eritrea project, funded by Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the HEI-ICI capacity building program. He has been involved in several EU initiatives, for example CONSTRUIT! and TACCLE3 (Erasmus+ KA2), as well as in eCraft2Learn H2020 projects. Furthermore, he has been playing an active role in development of the annual SciFest science and technology festival at Joensuu. He has gained teaching, research, and project administration experience from several international collaboration initiatives from number of European and African countries, for example Eritrea, South Africa, Nepal, Tanzania, Zambia, and Mozambique.

Dr. Solomon Sunday Oyelere, solomon.oyelere (at), Post-doc researcher

Solomon's research interest focus mainly on improving learning environments through smart technology, pedagogy and content. He applies techniques from multidisciplinary areas including educational technology, interactive mobile computing, web technology, computing education, and educational data mining. He has received a number of research funding, including the Jenny and Antti Wihuri postdoctoral fellowship in Finland, and the University of Eastern Finland research mobility grant to Athabasca University, Canada. He currently coordinates EU-LAC project, "Smart Ecosystem for Learning and Inclusion (SELI)". He acquired teaching, research, funding and project management skills over several years of international work and partnership across Europe, Latin America, Caribbean, Asia and Africa, such as Poland, Turkey, Germany, Uruguay, Brazil, Ecuador, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, India, Tanzania and Nigeria. He is the initiator and founder of the Multidisciplinary Research and Innovation Group (MRIG).

Dr. Mohammed Saqr

As a neurologist, a teacher and a computer science researcher, Mohammed's research interests are interdisciplinary and includes learning analytics, network science and analysis, education, computer science, assessment, neurology, and psychiatry. He did his PhD at Stockholm University (Sweden) in collaborative predictive learning analytics using network indicators to find a better understanding of the learning process and success. He also works on temporality of collaborative networks, engagement in small groups, statistical network modelling, resilience, and robustness of learning and social networks. Other research work includes psychological networks, migraine, depression, cerebrovascular reactivity.

MSc Tapani Toivonen

MSc Tapani Toivonen, tapani.toivonen (at), Early Stage Researcher

My research includes educational data mining and learning analytics. Especially I am interested in the algorithms that the end-user (in this case an educator) can use to analyze data collected from educational settings in order to deepen the understanding about the learners and the learning itself. My research covers mainly classification and cluster analysis algorithms in education. The starting point of my research is that educational data mining and learning analytics should be exploratory in nature and open to the end-user (the educator).
