Welcome to the Border Crossings homepage!
Border Crossings is an international Master's Degree programme in the Social Sciences at the University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu Campus.
Border Crossings offers high quality multi-disciplinary studies completely in English in one of two majors – Crossing Borders in a Global Context (MSocSc in Human Geography) and Borders, Society and Cultural Diversity (MSocSc in Sociology / Social and Public Policy). The programme also offers study opportunities to exchange students.
Why Border Crossings?
The Border Crossings programme offers engagement with a growing field of importance and global interest – borders. It gives graduates the skills to navigate the increasing debate on national and European identities, mobilities and migration, multi-culturalism and citizenship, and cross-border co-operation, especially along the EU’s external borders.
The programme aims to offer students from a variety of academic backgrounds a broader and deeper understanding of borders and bordering processes in society. The programme provides students with an excellent opportunity to gain a better understanding of diverse societies and cultures in a multi-national educational environment, while carrying out research for a Master’s degree.
The Border Crossings programme is an excellent platform to find employment in a wide range of professional jobs in various sectors of society, be it in academia, government, international organisations, NGOs or business, both in Finland and internationally. Having successfully completed the programme, students also are eligible to pursue doctoral studies in their field of specialisation.
Borders, Mobilities and Cultural Encounters is one of UEF's strategic, top-level international research areas.
The Border Crossings Master's Degree programme works closely together with the university's VERA Centre for Russian and Border Studies, promoting expertise on Borders, Border Areas and Russia at the University of Eastern Finland.
