My general research interests are in environmental science, ecosystem ecology, biogeochemistry, and wetland ecology. I’m interested in the effects of changing climate, such as warming temperatures, changes in precipitation, longer thawed seasons, and shifts in vegetation, on ecosystem processes and emissions of greenhouse gases (such as carbon dioxide and methane) from wetlands. My research focuses on wetlands throughout the Northern Hemisphere, where large carbon stocks found in peatlands are vulnerable to changes in climate.
My research identifies the controls on the carbon losses from wetlands using techniques such as soil incubations, plant macrofossil analysis, and laboratory experiments to characterize responses of wetland soils to simplified environmental conditions. I pair these experimental and observational analyses with data synthesis and modeling to develop a broad, landscape-scale understanding of controls on carbon cycling that can be used to improve the quantification of the carbon feedback from wetlands.
