Introduction

The research group of Aquatic Ecology and Behavioural Ecology operates on both campuses in Joensuu and Kuopio at the Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences. The group consists of five senior researchers, other researchers, post-docs as well as several PhD and MSc students. The group collaborates actively with Finnish (Universities of Helsinki, Oulu, Jyväskylä and Turku) and international (e.g. USA, Germany, Norway) research partners.

The main research areas include aquatic biology, aquatic ecology, evolutionary ecology and behavioural ecology, and the research approach is often multidisciplinary. Aquatic organisms, such as fish and crayfish as well as their parasites and diseases, are the main research targets although also terrestrial animals belong to study objects. Even though many of the research problems focus on basic research and scientific theories, also human activities and environmental changes are frequently studied. The group's research profile fits well with the emerging research area Aquatic Research in Changing World determined in the strategy of the UEF.

The research has been funded by e.g. the EU Framework Programmes for Research and Innovation, the Academy of Finland and several foundations. Four-year projects "Evolutionary restoration of trout populations impacted by human-induced selection" and "Behavioural Variation and Immunological Ecology in Invertebrates" funded by the Academy of Finland as well as three years Innovative Research Initiative UEF funding to understanding host-pathogen interactions are examples of recent projects. The group members are involved in several other national and international research projects. The group has a high publication profile – over 100 articles in refereed scientific journals in 2010-2015.
