Registration instructions for international exchange and visiting students - academic year 2016-2017

Registration at the university comes under the provisions of the Universities Act (558/2009).

These instructions concern international exchange students.

Academic year and registration

The academic year at the University of Eastern Finland officially begins on 1 August and ends on 31 July. The autumn semester courses will begin on 1 September 2016 and the spring semester courses on 9 January 2017.

All international exchange students must register as being present in person at Student and Learning Services (or on the Savonlinna Campus, at the Administration Service Centre of the Philosophical Faculty).  Upon registration, your information will be entered into the student register and you will be given a student number and a user account for the university's IT services (email, WebOodi). Please note that if your study period continues after December, even for one month, you must register as being present for the spring semester also.

Please present the following documents upon registration:

1. your identification card (ID card or passport)

2. your registration form duly filled out and signed

3. your receipt of the payment of the Student Union membership fee (a receipt issued by your bank, an ATM receipt or a print out from your online bank), if you choose to join the student union. See Student Union Membership and Student Card.

You should register in person at Student and Learning Services. The service hours are Mon-Fri 10-15 (during 1.6.-31.8. 10 am-2 pm).

Student union membership and student card

The Student Union membership fee is €126 for the full academic year or €65 for the autumn and spring semester each.

The Student Union (ISYY) membership is voluntary for international exchange students; however, it is highly recommended. The Student Union (ISYY) membership will entitle you to the services provided by the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS) and many other benefits.

You should pay the Student Union (ISYY) membership fee into following Student Union bank account. Remember to show the payment receipt when you are registering. If you pay the fee abroad, please note that you are responsible for any transfer fees that your bank may charge! You can also pay the fee in cash at any Finnish bank after your arrival.

Student card: Students who have paid the Student Union membership fee can order a student card. The student card should be ordered online and the card will be ready in about three weeks from ordering it. Before ordering you need a digital photo of yourself, your student number and a credit card (or a Finnish online banking) for the payment. You can order the card already before you have registered at the university, but it will not be made until you have paid the Student Union membership fee, registered as being present at the university, and paid (€15.10) for the card. Your card can be collected from the Student Union (ISYY) office.

The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) operates on three campuses.

When you register at the university, you will get a confirmation of registration. By showing this confirmation, you will get a discount on meals at the campus restaurants and you are entitled to use the services provided by Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS) until you get your student card. 

Activating your user account for the university's IT services

Upon registration, students will receive a one-time code with which they can activate their user account for the university's IT services online.
