Number of applicants to UEF’s international Master’s degree programmes grows by 30 percent

The admission period to the international Master’s degree programmes taught in English at the University of Eastern Finland closed on 31 January 2019. A total of 21 international Master’s degree programmes invited applications, attracting 1,908 applicants from all over the world. The majority of applications came from Africa and Asia. Most of the applications were received from Ghana, Pakistan and Nigeria. Approximately 85% of the applicants came from outside the EU/EEA areas, like in the previous years.

The overall number of applicants increased by 30 percent in comparison to the previous year. After Finnish universities introduced tuition fees in 2017, more efforts have been targeted to the university’s international marketing.

As in previous years, the university’s international Master’s degree programmes in the fields of International Business, Innovation Management, Information Technology and Public Health were especially popular among applicants. In addition, the programmes in the fields of Environmental and Biological Sciences, and Biomedicine increased their number of applicants by approximately 60 percent.

According to Academic Rector Harri Siiskonen, the growth in the applicant numbers is delightful.
“It's delightful to notice that the university is increasingly attractive among international students. International degree-seeking students constitute an important part of the academic community” he says.

The student admission decisions will be made by the beginning of April, and the applicants will also be notified of a possible scholarship at the same time. The study place must be accepted by 15 May.
