Stunningly diverse SciFest science festival currently ongoing in Joensuu

SciFest, the number one science event of the year, will take place at Joensuu Arena for the ninth time in a row on 23–25 April 2015. Dozens of workshops, lectures, presentations, competitions and science cafés open to everyone focus on light and its properties, light-related phenomena and the significance of light.

"SciFest 2015 – Power of Light!" is open on Thursday and and Friday from 9:00 to 17:00, and on Saturday from 10:00 to 15:00. In addition to the traditional workshops aimed at families, Saturday's programme also features the SciEdu professional development event for teachers. SciFest is open to everyone and free of charge. The festival is organised by Joensuu Science Society in cooperation with the University of Eastern Finland and other partners.

Come explore the power of light!

Is it possible to paint with light? How can robots be controlled with the help of light? Did you know that insects produce light, or that light can be used to study plants and humans? SciFest provides answers to all of these questions, and the festival's offering is tailored to cater for all age groups. In addition to light, the festival also addresses the fields of natural sciences, technology, music and culture.

"For the first time, we are faced with the positive challenge of how to fit everyone who wants to organise a workshop in Joensuu Arena. Especially Saturday's SciEdu professional development event aimed at teachers in the Joensuu region will motivate workshop organisers to stay for the entire festival. So we are looking for bright and insightful moments here at SciFest on Saturday," says Ilkka Jormanainen, Technology Manager at Joensuu Science Society.

This year, SciFest includes a record number of companies and other organisations as workshop organisers, practical organisers and financial partners.

"We are very proud of how actively companies and other actors in the region have participated in organising and supporting this year's SciFest. The involvement of new actors is just wonderful, and will surely help us take our activities to the next level," says Pauliina Korhonen, Executive Manager of Joensuu Science Society.

A theatre club and robot sumo wrestling

SciFest's cooperation with Joensuu City Theatre, which began last year, continues also this year.  A theatre club under the theme "Why go towards the light? Discussion about the technology and aesthetics of light." will be held at Joensuu Arena on Thursday from 18:00 to 20:00. The club is led by Director Aino Kivi and it features Professor Pasi Vahimaa of the Institute of Photonics of the University of Eastern Finland and Light Artist Kari Kola of Valoparta Ltd. as guest speakers.

According to Erkki Sutinen, Chair of Joensuu Science Society, the investments of the City of Joensuu in the SciEdu professional development event held in connection with SciFest are unique.

"This is an excellent way to bring together teachers, workshop organisers and educational developers to genuinely do things together, to experiment new things and to share their skills and expertise. SciFest is an annual meeting place, or a huge playground if you will, for testing and gathering feedback on new ideas, methods, products and operating models," Sutinen says.

SciFest also witnesses the Finnish Championships in RoboCupJunior, bringing more than 60 teams and hundreds of competitors to compete in robot soccer, robot dance, robot rescue and robot sumo wrestling.

The theme country of this year's SciFest is Germany, which can be seen in a number of workshops and lectures held by German guests, as well as in the German Movie Week that takes place in the movie theatre Tapio. The festival also hosts international guests from Russia, France, the UK, the US and Estonia.
