University of Helsinki
Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry
The education of foresters in Finland was established in Evo College in 1862 and was moved to the University of Helsinki in 1908. The faculty is located in the internationally recognized Viikki Science Park in Helsinki , the capital of Finland. The Viikki Science Park is, with more than 6,000 students, one of the largest concentrations of biosciences in the world. The University of Helsinki, having the widest range of disciplines among Finnish universities, provides an innovative and multidisciplinary environment for modern research and education focusing on the sustainable use of forests.
There are three departments specialising in forest sciences under the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. These departments are the Department of Forest Ecology, the Department of Forest Economics and the Department of Forest Resource Management.
Majors
In the department of Forest Ecology students have a joint major subject in Forest Ecology but they can specialise in any of the nine following subjects: silviculture, forest soil, forest tree ecology, peatland ecology and forestry, tropical silviculture, forest pathology, forest tree breeding, forest zoology or wildlife management.
In the department of Forest Economics students can major in forest economics or forest products marketing.
In the department of Forest Resource Management students have a joint major subject in Forest Resource Science and Technology under which the students can choose their specialisation between four education lines: forest inventory, forest planning, forest technology, or wood technology. Geoinformatics and logistics are available as minors.
CBU students major in forest economics, forest products marketing, forest resource science and management, or forest ecology.
